Canby's Commitment to Business:

Founded in 2006, the Canby Economic Development Authority has helped bring two businesses into Canby in it's first year. One, American financial Consultants, is a web-based company that handles international leasing of everything from sewing machines to heavy equipment. They are located in what used to be the clinic building. Also brought in is a wind power company called Outland, which installs and maintains wind turbines. They are located in a building that used to be a furniture store. The EDA is currently working on two more projects. One is expansion and relocation of an existing business in town, retail, and the other is an as yet unknown company that has simply run out of room where it is. It would be located in the industrial park near the airport.

Canby is also home to two electronics engineering businesses that are web based and their engineers design products and help set up production all over the world.

The airport has been expanded and last year opened a 4,400-foot runway, which handles executive jets and the fleet of medical aircraft used by Sanford Health Systems, which has a regional health care center in Canby that offers everything from surgical and obstetrical services, to specialized in home monitoring, nursing home and transitional living right on the grounds of the hospital-clinic complex.

Canby is also home to a special training program offered on the Canby campus of Minnesota West Technical and Community College for workers in the wind turbine industry. Graduates of the program have finished two years of study and between years all had internships with wind energy companies and offers of permanent jobs. This year was the graduation for the first six students. The class now numbers 28 and still growing.

The Canby campus has its own 35kw turbine and is in line to get one of the newest ones on the market because of heavy interest and investment by the wind energy industry. The college also offers everything from electrician classes to dental assisting and even traditional academic degree core classes.
