The Canby Chamber of Commerce met on Tuesday November 12th at P.K. Egans at 5:00PM. The meeting was called to order by President Diana Fliss. Members present were Pat Stanley, Chris Grussing, Joyce Olson-Baer, and Florene Dybsettter. Also attending were John Thelen , Wendy Rouse, and Mike Baer. We also had represented from the Depot: Eldean Baer, Lauren Gjovig, Evie Lozinski and Dorothy Birner.
The Secretary’s report was read for October.
Old business issues were then addressed. Everyone was wondering if Frontier had paid for their banner. Yes, we did receive that payment and the banners are paid in full.
Christmas updates: The Christmas Calendar was delivered to the Canby News on November 8th. The Christmas movies were discussed and they have been ordered. The Chamber will sponsor 2 and the Jaycee’s will sponsor one on the 14th of December. We received $200.00 from SVCC as a donation for the movies.
The Santa house will be at the Depot this year and Bob Barry will be our Santa this year. He has a schedule and Florene will make sure that he gets the suckers to be given to the children. The Santa suit has been given to Bob and the decorations were given to Chris Grussing for use at the depot.
We moved on to discussion of the lighting contest. Otter Tail Power has agreed to donate $125.00 for the contest and Wendy Rouse said she would get judges and take care of those details. First place will be $100.00, 2nd place will be $50.00 and 3rd place will be $25.00. The entry form will be put in the paper for 2 weeks. Those being the week of November 25th and December 2nd. Just for the record: the ad went in the week of the 18th. Deadline for entry is December 10th and judging will be done on December 12th. We discussed the Christmas drawings and decided it would be best to have four of them. The drawing will be held at a different business each week. We will give away $50.00 in Canby Bucks and you must be present to win. Each participating business will have entry forms in their office and will deliver them to the business where the drawing will take place. The four businesses to have the drawings will be Canby Drug, Duebers, Runnings, and True Value. Florene will make sure that the store has the Canby Bucks. Members from the depot were present for the Christmas update.
We then went on to New Business: We discussed at length moving the Chamber office to the depot. The consensus was that the people present from the depot would take the information back to the depot board and they had a meeting on Thursday evening and they would decide if they want the Chamber office in the depot or not. They had concerns about how much involvement they would have in Chamber duties. Also they were concerned about losing their grant money if they received money from the Chamber. They will inform us of their decision. Joyce Olson-Baer was asked if she would be interested in being the Secretary/Treasurer and she stated she was not.
The Holiday mixer at Mn West will be on December 4th from 5 to 7PM. The public is invited.
We still need replacements on the board for Pat, Chris, Joyce and Belinda. Wendy Rouse may be a possibility and also John Thelen.
We moved on to the Arctic Blast. Events seem to be coming along. Peer Pressure has been contacted and will be here on Friday, January 17th from 9 to 12. A motion was made, seconded and carried to allow Christine $200.00 for children’s activities. The tabletop flyers look nice and more final decisions will be made in December.
A motion was made seconded and carried to adjourn the meeting. Our next Chamber meeting will be on December 10th at the VFW at 5PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Florene Dybsetter, Secretary/Treasurer
