Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

March 9, 2004 – Canby VFW

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 5:00 pm on March 9th at the Canby VFW with the following board members present: Jeff Harms, Angie Groenhoff, Kelli Palmquist and Derrick Ruether.  Also present were Don and Ellie Beman, Pat Stanley and Ron Fjerkenstad.

2)     Reports: Derrick called the meeting to order. Kelli presented the secretary’s report.  Don presented the treasurer’s report.

 

3)     Guest Speaker – Gene Nordquist – “Join Hands Day” - : Gene presented an upcoming one-day community project sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  Both Canby and Granite Falls were chosen as cities in Yellow Medicine County to each receive a $500 grant from Thrivent to use towards a community project. Gene requested ideas from the Canby Chamber board. This project would be planned and executed by both adults and youth.  This event would need to take place between April 1st and July 1st.  Several ideas were discussed as to what type of community project should be done. Ideas discussed were painting the fire hydrants, repairing park equipment, repotting and planting city flowers, and replace trees in the park. In addition, a representative came from the Federated Women’s Club and discussed the progress of the creation of the park next to True Value. Suggestions to finalize a project were to create a committee to survey the city on ideas, discuss ideas with the planning committee for the 125th Anniversary Celebration and talk to Canby Rotary.  Jeff Harms mentioned that the Student Senate would be interested in helping with any labor needed however; the event would need to be before 5/1 due to graduation. Other groups that could assist in providing labor are the local Girl Scouts and the Canby Rotary.

 

4)     City of Milan-125th Anniversary Celebration: The city of Milan is celebrating it’s 125th Anniversary on Sat., July 3rd at 1:00 pm. The city of Canby is invited to participate in the parade. Ron volunteered his flag car to be used in the parade.  Angie made a motion to approve Canby’s participation. Kelli seconded the motion.

 

5)     Upper Regional Development Center: Derrick reviewed a letter the Chamber received stating that there are two seminars coming up in the Appleton Civic Center:  Business Planning – March 30th & Market Planning – April 6th.

 

6)     MCCE: Derrick reviewed a letter from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Executives requesting to renew our listing in the membership directory. Canby Chamber of Commerce is currently a “non-member” and the annual fee is $25. It would cost at a minimum $50 to become a listed member. Ron made a motion to keep current membership and pay the $25.  Derrick seconded the motion.

 

7)     Canby Band Booster Club: The Canby Band Booster Club is requesting items to donate for the upcoming Chili Feed & Silent Auction on March 23rd. Ron made a motion to donate 2 of the Canby 125th Celebration Trivets. Jeff seconded the motion.

 

8)     Yellow Medicine East Community Education: There is a community fair going to be held on May 4th in Clarkfield from 4-8:00 pm.  Derrick is finding out what the cost is to have a booth at this fair.  This topic will be further discussed at the next Chamber of Commerce meeting on April 13th.

 

9)     Neighborhood Watch Program: Pat Stanley suggested the Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor this program. He is following up with Barb-City Administrator on what the next steps are to get involved in this program.

 

10) Welcome to Canby Signs: Pat Stanley made a motion to add the Canby Chamber of Commerce web address on the “Welcome to Canby” signs coming into town.  The board agreed on this. Ron made a motion to get the estimated cost to make the addition from Sig Armitage. Derrick seconded the motion.
