Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

April 13, 2004 – DeToys

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 5:00 pm on April 13th at DeToy’s with the following board members present: Jeff Harms, Angie Groenhoff, Kelli Palmquist and Derrick Ruether.  Also present were Don and Ellie Beman, Pat Stanley, Diana Fliss, and Barb Hoyhtya.

2)     Reports: Derrick called the meeting to order. Kelli presented the Secretary’s report.  Don presented the Treasurer’s report.

3)     Neighborhood Watch Program (old business): This program was further discussed. Pat Stanley has left a message with Rich Blackwelder. Barb Hoyhtya is checking with City Council and the police dept to see how the Chamber can get involved - preferably after the 125th Celebration.

4)     Welcome to Canby Signs (old business): During the 3/09 Chamber meeting, Pat Stanley made a motion to add the Canby Chamber of Commerce web address on the “Welcome to Canby” signs coming into town.  The board agreed on this.  FINDINGS: Sig Armitage is no longer in the sign business and also the Rotary does not own these signs.  The question is who claims ownership of these signs and is it possible to create all new signs instead of continuing to add onto the existing signs. Barb Hoyhtya is checking with City Council.

5)     Yellow Medicine East Community Education (old business): There is a community fair going to be held on May 4th in Clarkfield from 4-8:00 pm.  Derrick did find out the cost to being involved in this activity. Canby Chamber of Commerce will not attend this event.

6)     “Join Hands” DayDiscussion continued regarding what type of activity should be conducted for this one-day community project sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  Ideas discussed were: assisting Andy Nefstead with the Birthday Park, participating in the City-Wide Clean-up on May 1st (9-noon), and planting bushes at Triangle Park in conjuntion with Arbor month. The group agreed that doing both the City-Wide Clean-up day & planting the lilac bushes would be the best project. The funds could be used for clean-up supplies, lunch for volunteers and bushes for the park. The following groups were discussed as possible volunteers include Rotary, 4-H club, Student Senate, and Chamber members. Don Beman is asking Rotary for volunteers. Angie Groenhoff is asking 4-H Club for volunteers. Jeff Harms is asking Student Senate for volunteers. Derrick Ruether is following up with Gene Nordquist to approve the idea.

7)     Clarkfield Parade –Received invitation from City of Clarkfield to participate in upcoming “Heart of the Prairie” parade at 7:00 pm on Wed, June 9th. All participants at this Chamber meeting agreed Canby should participate however; there may not be enough time to create a float for this event this year. The other issue is where this float once developed can be stored.  One idea is to post an ad in the Canby News asking for volunteers to build float. Diana Fliss is following up with Charlene Wallert first and Derrick Ruether is calling Ron Fjerkenstad to see if he could be a driver.

8)     Edgerton Parade – Received invitation from City of Edgerton to participate in their upcoming parade on July 8-10th. All participants at this Chamber meeting agreed this was too far away to participate. Idea was discussed to create a master tracking sheet of parades Canby Chamber would like to participate in next year.

9)     MN Chamber of Commerce – Received letter requesting nominations from MN Chamber offices for Business Leaders to be part of MN Chamber of Commerce. Canby Chamber of Commerce had no nominations.

10)  Jay Hanson Benefit – Angie Groenhoff asked what could be contributed or donated to this benefit. Diana made a motion for the 125th Anniversary Celebration committee donate 2 trivets for the auction. Kelli seconded the motion.

11)  City of Canby Welcome Wagon – Lamorne Wiest has requested a replacement for her activities managing the Welcome Wagon.  Ellie Beman is putting an ad in the Canby News requesting a volunteer to take over this position.

12)  City Flower Pot Maintenance – Derrick is asking Ron Fjerkenstad if he wants to take charge of the order, planting and maintenance.   We’ll need also to have the City get the barrels out of storage.

13)  Lyon CountyHazardous Reduction Seminars – Received notice of two seminars by Roger Schroeder on May 11th – Worthington & May 18th – Granite Falls.  This notice requested City of Canby to either submit a listing of all businesses in the Chamber, a link on the Canby Chamber of Commerce to the Southwest Website concerning these seminars, or place an ad in the paper for local businesses. Ellie Beman is checking with Lyon County to see if they are going to run an ad in the Canby News.

14)  Next Meeting: Tues, May 4th, 5:00 pm at PK Egans
