Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting December 14, 2004 – VFW
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 5:00 pm on December 14th at the Canby VFW with the following board members present: Kelli Palmquist, Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Ron Fjerkenstad and Jan Pederson. Also present were Loren Hacker. 2) Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. Kelli presented the Secretary’s report. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. Old Business 3) Canby Chamber Annual Meeting: The Group decided that the Canby Chamber of Commerce meeting will tentatively be held on Sat, March 19th, 2005. The event will be a sit-down dinner with also a Community Recognition event where other service groups in the community can present community members with service awards. The details of “master of ceremonies”, location, and time are still being determined. 4) New Canby Chamber Board Members: This will be discussed during the Chamber Annual meeting in January. The idea was suggested about adding the Chamber Treasurer as a board member. Board members will also receive from Don Beman during the annual Chamber meeting a list of all paying members of Canby Chamber. Each board member will personally contact a group of members to encourage their participation in the Canby Chamber of Commerce. New ideas are needed!! Each board member will also explain the new role of the Canby Chamber of Commerce, Activities Committee, etc. The group also discussed having one representative from every Service organization in Canby to participate in the Chamber for 6 months (e.g. Lions Club, Rotary).
5) Canby Events Committee:
· Christmas Planning/Activities – List of events that have happened or are scheduled for the remainder of December were reviewed. Contact either Ellie Beman or Diana Fliss for a copy of these events. · Artic Blast – The following events are some of the events that are planned to take place during this weekend celebration (Fri, 1/28 & Sat, 1/29). o Advertising – Committee is working on advertising; Kelli gave Ellie information about the special that KLOH is offering for radio ads. Schedule of events is subject to change up until week after Christmas. Artic Blast List of Event flyers will be produced sometime during the week after Christmas. To obtain current list of events, contact Ellie Beman or Diana Fliss. A high-level list is listed below. o Friday events include: Chili Cook-off/Dance at Canby VFW (6:00 pm); o Saturday events include: Canby Rotary Wrestling Tournament (Canby News will have list of Sat Events on the back of the Wrestling flyers), Court-wist party sponsored by Women’s Federated Group, Kid’s ice fishing derby at Lake Sylvan (possible sponsorship from DNR), Polar Plunge, Pinochle tournament, free matinee at Canby Theatre, Snow Sculpture Contest, Medallion hut, “Miss Tootsie/Artic Anne contest and northern lighting contest. · Hat Daze – 2005 – Planning is underway! The goal is to have one “new” thing different each year.
6) Renegade Speedway – There has been a change of ownership for the Renegade Speedway. Ribbon cutting is TBD.
7) Changes to Canby Chamber Meetings & other Chamber sponsored Activities/Recognition – Pat will begin to invite local business speakers to monthly meetings. In addition, Canby Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Congratulations message in the Canby News and recognition at the Recognition meeting in March for Jill Pesek who was crowned “Cattle Queen” in 2004. The Chamber is going to recognize Jill and the current Hat Daze queen at more city events (e.g. Artic Blast).
8) Annual Chamber Dues – Ideas for promoting Chamber membership were discussed and one idea was to discount the first year dues by 50% for 1st year members. Kelli made a motion to approve this change. Ron seconded the motion. In addition, Pat suggested that as part of the dues that members pay, each due paying member will receive a “feature” on their business in the Canby News once per year. This will be further discussed at the Annual meeting in January.
