Canby Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting January 11, 2005 – DeToys
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 5:00 pm on January 11th at DeToys with the following board members present: Kelli Palmquist, Pat Stanley, Don Beman, and Ron Fjerkenstad. Also present was Ellie Beman and guest speaker, Canby Police Officer-Kevin Day. 2) Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. Kelli presented the Secretary’s report. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. Old Business 3) Canby Chamber Annual Meeting: The Group decided that the Canby Chamber of Commerce meeting will tentatively be held on Sat, March 19th, 2005. The event will be a sit-down dinner with also a Community Recognition event where other service groups in the community can present community members with service awards. The details of “master of ceremonies”, location, and time are still being determined. 4) Canby Chamber Board Member Status: Jeff Harms, Angie Groenhoff, and Derrick Ruether’s terms are up at the start of 2005. Ron Fjerkenstad and Kelli Palmquist are on until 2006. Jan Pederson joined in Fall 2004. The Chamber Board needs 3 more board members. Wendy Rouse expressed interest in 2004. Kelli is following up with Wendy. Pat is following up with Sioux Valley Hospital to see if there are any employees interested in participating.
5) Canby Events Committee:
· Artic Blast – The group reviewed the list of activities. The only activity that is not finalized is who is sponsoring the Pancake breakfast on Sunday, 1/30. The committee is in progress of finalizing this event. · Hat Daze – 2005 – Planning is underway! The group discussed having a small carnival instead of a parade this year. There currently is no Parade committee to plan the parade. Don made a motion to approve having a carnival instead of a parade. Kelli seconded the motion. Ellie is taking this change to the committee.
6) Annual Chamber Dues – Correction from Dec, 2004 minutes: an additional option for dues payment is quarterly
New Business
7) Future Speakers – Feb – Spud Nelson for Canby Speedway; Mar – Representative from the Workforce Center in Marshall, Apr- Aaron Peterson-Legislative Updates, subsequent months – TBD. To be further discussed during February Chamber Meeting.
8) Dues Letters – Letter is being drafted and is being sent out no later than 2/5/05.
9) Future Monthly Chamber Meetings – In order to determine if participation will improve, Chamber meetings will be tentatively moved to Noon on every second Wednesday of the month. This change will take effect in Feb.
10) Guest Speaker-Kevin Day – Kevin reviewed tips on how to safeguard your business against theft. In addition, the group discussed having the Chamber sponsor a fire hazard/theft check-up for each small business in Canby. This check-up would be conducted by the Canby FD and Police departments. This would be held in March. Planning to be further discussed during Feb. Chamber meeting. Conducting a “National Night Out/Neighborhood Watch” was also discussed. Kevin is following up with Isaiah Keating to determine availability and logistics. Ellie volunteered to add this to the list of events the Events Committee will manage.
