Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting March 9th, 2005 – PK Egans
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on March 9th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Ron Fjerkenstad and Amy Newcomb. Also present were Loren Hacker, Sabrina Stockman, Barb Hoyhtya, Menno Fokken, Bonnie Longtin, Laurie Driessen, Nancy Salmon, Cheryl Ferguson, Ruth Ascher, Sharon Foldell, and Sara Jensen. 2) Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees. Kelli presented the Secretary’s reports. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. Old Business 3) Canby Chamber Annual Meeting: The Canby Events committee is working on confirming a date in April for this event. This will be held at DeToys. The group discussed entertainment ideas. The entertainment that was decided was to have a “Community Recognition” event. Each service organization and/or employer can nominate someone to be recognized for a job well done or great volunteer service. Loren is creating the certificates. Barb is working with the Canby Events committee to get a list of the businesses and service organizations. They will be sent information on this event. 4) Canby Chamber Website Calendar – The Canby Event calendar has been updated on the website. For updates, e-mail Diana Fliss, Don Beman, or Barb Hoyhtya. 5) Canby Chamber Board Member Status- The Chamber Board needs 1-2 more board members. Sabrina Stockman from State Farm Insurance has joined the board. Laurie Driessen from REM also joined the Chamber board. The Chamber is still in need of 1-2 more board members.
New Business
6) Future Speakers –April – Snortum’s Nurseries-possibly; May-Randy Jacobson (message board)-possibly & subsequent months – TBD. Pat is working with Isaiah Keating to put together a presentation on the problem with Meth Labs. This will be open to the community.
7) Broadband Event- Barb reported this is on hold for now and may be held in the fall.
8) Christmas Decoration Fund – The group approved a separate fund be set up to save for new Christmas Decorations. $550 from the Artic Blast profits will be deposited to this fund. Loren made a motion to approve this fund. Ron seconded the motion.
9) Upcoming Ribbon Cuttings - Ribbon cutting at "Quilting by Bonnie” - TBD. Don Beman is working with Bonnie Longtin to reserve a date and time. Ribbon cutting for the Canby Speedway will be the first night of races, May 21st.
10) Guest Speakers-Sharon Foldwell & Sara Jensen – Representatives of the Workforce Center in Montevideo spoke of the assistance this center provides to disabled persons and employers. They also discussed the upcoming seminar on April 7, 2005 in Granite Falls (at the casino). This is open to the public.
11) Yellow Medicine County Fair - The Yellow Medicine Fair will be held from July 21st through the 24th. Menno presented a list of the activities that will run throughout the weekend. This list is not finalized.
