Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

April 13th, 2005 – PK Egans

 

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on April 13th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Ron Fjerkenstad, Laurie Driessen, Amy Newcomb, Kelli Palmquist, and Sabrina Stockman. Also present were Loren Hacker, Diana Fliss, Bonnie Longtin, Darold Snortum, Cheryl Ferguson, Ruth Ascher, Chris Grussing, Terry Overlander, Danielle Snortum, Pete Snortum, Julie Swedinski, Karen Houtman, Rodney Hansen, and Paul Huber.

2)     Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  Kelli presented the Secretary’s reports. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. 

Old Business

3)     Canby Chamber Annual Meeting: The event will be held at DeToys on Friday, April 22nd. Tickets are printed and for sale. Deadline to purchase tickets is no later than Sat, 4/16. Tom from DeToy’s needs the final count on Mon, 4/18. Loren is creating the certificates and has confirmed that 17 organizations have participated and he has created approximately 34 certificates.  Loren volunteered to introduce the representatives from each organization to present the certificates. Other agenda items for the meeting include the 2005 budget and board replacement (Kelli and Pat will remain on the board).

4)     2005 Hat Daze Update – The Canby Events committee has produced a preliminary schedule of events. This is available by request through the Chamber. A parade is planned for 6:00 pm on Sat – June 18th.

5)     City Banners- Chris Husby is providing a map of banners to Barb. The Chamber will then need to inspect each one to determine if replacement is necessary. The Chamber is also going to discuss possibly doing seasonal banners in the future.

 

New Business

 

6)     Future Speakers – May-Randy Jacobson (message board); June-Tom Watson-ROC. July – TBD; Tues, Aug 2nd – “Night Against Crime” – see below for details.

 

7)     “Night Against Crime” event- scheduled for Tues, Aug 2nd at PK Egans in conjunction with the Rotary weekly meeting. Presentation on current issue of Meth Labs in communities.

 

8)     City Flower Barrels -  Ron Fjerkenstad has asked for assistance in watering these barrels during the summer. Sabrina Stockman is following up with the Girlscouts organization to possibly do this as a summer project. Ron is working with Pete Snortum get an estimate on replacing the soil.

 

9)     Upcoming Ribbon Cuttings - Ribbon cutting at "Quilting by Bonnie” – Thurs, 4/14-4:00 pm. Ribbon cutting for the Canby Speedway will be the first night of races, May 21st. Other ribbon cuttings – TBD (Bohms Auto Glass, New owners of the Bakery, New owners of A New Leaf, High Prairie Sports Clay).

 

 

10) Guest Speakers-Sharon Foldwell & Sara Jensen – Representatives of the Workforce Center in Montevideo spoke of the assistance this center provides to disabled persons and employers. They also discussed the upcoming seminar on April 7, 2005 in Granite Falls (at the casino).  This is open to the public.

 

11)  Yellow Medicine County Fair - The Yellow Medicine Fair will be held from July 21st through the 24th. Menno presented a list of the activities that will run throughout the weekend. This list is not finalized.
