Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

May 11th, 2005 – PK Egans

 

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on May 11th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Ron Fjerkenstad, Amy Newcomb, Kelli Palmquist, and Sabrina Stockman. Also present were Cheryl Ferguson, Chris Grussing, Ellie Beman, Barb Hoyhtya, Nancy Soloman, and Randy Jacobson.

2)     Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  Kelli presented the Secretary’s reports. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. 

Old Business

3)     Canby Chamber Annual Meeting: The event was held at DeToys on Friday, April 22nd. There was a great turn-out of people. The event was a big success! A big Thank-You goes out to Loren Hacker for presenting at the event.

4)     “Citizen of the Year” award – Pat proposed that the Chamber sponsor a “Citizen of the Year” award. Local service organizations, committees, city council, and citizens can nominate a candidate. This individual would be recognized at the next annual Chamber meeting. Criteria for the award is yet to be determined.

5)     City Banners- Chris Husby has not provided the map of banners to Barb. Barb is contacting Chris. Pat suggested we order generic banners through an order that the Dawson Chamber is placing. Amy Newcomb is contacting Jim Bakken from Dawson to see when they plan to place the order.

6)     City Flower Barrels - Ron Fjerkenstad made a motion asking for funding for the peat moss and the flowers he needs to buy for the pots. The board approved this motion. Sabrina Stockman followed up with the Girl Scouts organization to possibly do this as a summer project. There are not enough resources within the organization to fulfill these duties. The group suggested contacting Bill Wiest to see if he would like to volunteer for the watering again.  Kelli contacted Bill. He does not have the appropriate truck to accommodate this task. Duane Anderson contacted Ron and volunteered.

 

New Business

 

7)     Future Speakers –-Tom Watson-RDC. July – MN West Foundation Director; Tues, Aug 2nd – “Night Against Crime” (in partnership with Canby Rotary).

 

8)     Election of New Board Officers – Vice President position is open-discuss at June meeting

 

9)     Approval of 2005 Budget- the budget was reviewed and approved by the meeting attendees and the board.

 

 

10) Upcoming Ribbon Cuttings – Canby Bakery –TBD (Amy is letting us know when her chef coat is in); Canby Speedway will be the first night of races, May 21st at 7:00 pm; High Prairie Sports Clay-June 2nd at 4:00 pm; and Bohms Auto Glass – TBD; New Owners of the Funeral Home – TBD; and the Canby VFW once the improvements are completed.

 

 

11) Change in Ribbon Cuttings – A framed certificate will be presented to new businesses now with the “1st Dollar of Profit” instead of a plant.

 

 

12)  Student Welcome-MN West – This is scheduled for August 24th; members of the Chamber should be there that day to welcome the students. Pat suggested the Canby brochure be handed out as well. A draft of the brochure will be ready in June.

 

13)  Pioneer Public TV – Meth Info Sponsorship request by Loren Hacker – discuss at June meeting.

 

14) Guest Speakers-Randy Jacobson – Randy reviewed the proposal to add a school/community electronic message board in Canby. The cost is to be funded by the school and local organization support. There were several location ideas discussed. The main decision left to make is a location. The Canby Chamber Board made a motion and approved support for this project.  Pat reminded Randy if a decision on the message board is made before July 1st, then the DOT may have some grant money available.
