Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

June 8th, 2005 – PK Egans

 

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on June 8th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Laurie Driessen, Amy Newcomb, and Kelli Palmquist. Also present were Cheryl Ferguson, Chris Grussing, Ellie Beman, Diana Fliss, Nancy Soloman, Dar Snortum, Walt & Dottie Birner, Ruth Leppke, John “Bud” Qualley, Millard Hayek, Bill Lund, Eldeen Baer, Tom Watson (RDC) and Jake Sanders from Granite Falls.

2)     Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  Kelli presented the Secretary’s reports. Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. 

Old Business

3)     Ribbon Cuttings Held: The following ribbon cuttings were held last month: Canby Speedway, Canby Bakery (new ownership) and High Prairie Sporting Clays.

4)     “Citizen of the Year” award – Pat proposed that the Chamber sponsor a “Citizen of the Year” award. Local service organizations, committees, city council, and citizens can nominate a candidate. This individual would be recognized at the next annual Chamber meeting. Criteria for the award have not yet been determined. Need a representative from the Chamber – Laurie Driessen volunteered.

5)     City Banners- 8 are missing; there are 5 at the Chamber office that might be repairable. Pat is working on seeing if they can be fixed.

6)     Hat Daze Update – Diana presented the list of activities planned for Hat Daze. Great participation for the parade!  Asked local businesses to hang flyers in spots that still need them.

7)     City Tourism/Business Brochure – Ellie is stilling working on this. It should have the first draft ready in the next few weeks.

8)     Election Vice Chair – Laurie Driessen has been appointed Vice Chair of the Chamber Board.

9)     National Night out Against Crime – Pat is working with Barb H. and Isaiah to schedule this for Aug 24th. The Chamber Board approved donating $200 to this event.

10)  MN West Student Welcome – Tentatively scheduled for Aug. 24th. The Chamber Board approved donating $200 to this event.

11)  Batter B Project – The Chamber is sponsoring a fundraiser for the families that have a loved one deployed in Iraq on 7/2 at the VFW. This will help pay for any needs the family may have. The Fire Dept volunteered to complete the roof project that is soon to be underway for a local Canby family.

 

New Business

 

12) Future Speakers –-July – MN West Foundation Director; Aug-co-event w/Canby Rotary; Sept – Pork Representative

 

13) Election of New Board Officers – Vice President position is open-discuss at June meeting

 

14) Upcoming Parades – Ron is driving the flag car to represent Canby Chamber this weekend in the Boyd parade. He is also using the car for the Hat Daze parade, the Madison parade on 7/4, and the Ortonville parade on 8/21.

 

 

 

15) Upcoming Ribbon Cuttings – Bohms Auto Glass (TBD); Funeral Home (new owners)-mid/late summer (date TBD); CAS Plumbing (New Owners)-TBD.

 

16)  Wrap-up Hat Daze Pizza Party – Pat recommended holding a wrap-up party for all who volunteered during Hat Daze on the Monday after the weekend. The group agreed this was a good event for the Chamber to sponser.

 

17)  Weeds –Canby Businesses – Pat suggested to downtown businesses to improve the maintenance of the weeds by their business. Laurie is looking into making the weed pulling a possibly Boy/Girl scout project.

 

 

18)  Pioneer Public TV – Meth Info Sponsorship request by Loren Hacker – discuss at July meeting.  Loren Hacker was not present today.

 

19) Guest Speakers-Tom Watson from RDC – Tom reviewed the mission of the RDC and the various activities and surveys they conduct to monitor tourism in Southern MN. He went over ideas for Southwestern MN and tips on improving tourism.  There will be a meeting held on Tues, 6/14 from 11:30-1:00 at PK Egan’s to discuss Canby specific tourism.
