Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

September 14th, 2005 – PK Egans

 

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on September 14th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Laurie Driessen, Amy Newcomb, Sabrina Stockman, and Derrick Ruether. Also present were Ellie Beman, Karen Houtman, Katie Delaney, Cheryl Ferguson, Barb Hoyhtya, Traci Wente, Chris Grussing, and Laron Krause from the MN Pork Board.

2)     Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  Pat presented the Secretary’s report.  Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. 

Old Business

3)     Ribbon Cuttings To Be Scheduled: The following ribbon cuttings need to be scheduled:  Sunset Assisted Living.

4)     Student Welcome at Minnesota West with Rotary- Great turnout!  The students appreciated the prizes that were donated by the businesses.  A thank you note was received from Katie Delaney-Canby Campus Marketer.

5)     Outstanding Citizen/Hall of Fame- Laurie Driessen from the Chamber volunteered to be on the committee as well as Charleen Wallert from the City.  Loren Hacker or David Frank will be representing the Rotary.  Laurie noted that they have spoken, but have not had a meeting yet.  Pat urged them to get going because Arctic Blast is coming soon.

6)     Weed  Shootout-Shootout was completed.  It went very well.  A thank you note from Canby Drug was in the Canby News.   

7)     How Do We Get Main Street Businesses More Involved?-  Board discussion among attendees. 

 

New Business

8)     Future Speakers-Luanne Fondell-Dawson-Boyd Arts Association-October.  No speaker in November-will be discussing Holiday Preview.

 

9)     Budget to Actual comparison-Don printed out a report.

 

10) Activities committee-met September 8th.  There is still a need for members.  Discussion of Holiday Preview-sleigh ride (Gene Hoffman has a sleigh with wheels). Tour of churches with stained glass windows.  Barb is going to get a hold of Ministerial Association.  Possible battle of the cookbooks with each church participating.  This would be similar to the Chili Cook-off.   Admission would be $2.00 per person.  Also, discussed were the elementary students adopting a storefront to decorate for Christmas.  Committee is working with Sandi Arndt.  Discussed possibility of businesses decorating their storefronts for Arctic Blast.

 

11)  Tom Watson from the RDC-Don mentioned that he is in need of $500.00 from someone in Canby to cover his deficit.  This is just so he can keep going through the rest of the year.  There was discussion that the Chamber was going to budget for it next year and if we give to it this year then we should reduce it from next year’s budget.  There was discussion about how the Chamber would benefit from giving this money.  Motion was made and seconded to give Mr. Watson $500.00 to help with the rest of this year.  Motion was carried.   

 

12) Guest Speaker-Laron Krause-MN Pork Board–Laron discussed the advancements made in the pork industry.

 

13)  Next Meeting: October 12th, 2005 at noon at PK Egan’s.
