Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

October 19, 2005 – PK Egans

 

 

1)     Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on October 19th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Pat Stanley, Don Beman, Laurie Driessen, Amy Newcomb, Sabrina Stockman, and Kelli Palmquist. Also present were Ellie Beman, Karen Houtman, Katie Delaney, Loren Hacker, Teasha Schneider, Nancy Salmon, Barb Hoyhtya, Bonnie Longtin, Erin Hoffman & Jessica Sik from Canby High School Student Council, and Luanne Fondell from the Dawson-Boyd Arts Association.

2)     Reports: Pat called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  Kelli presented the Secretary’s report.  Don presented the Treasurer’s report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer reports. 

Old Business

3)     Ribbon Cuttings To Be Scheduled: The open house for Uptown Glamour and Spa was held on Mon, 10/17. Pat has invited them to the Chamber meeting to receive their first $1 of profit certificate. Sabrina is working on scheduling the following ribbon cuttings: Sunset Assisted Living, Big Stone Therapies, and Deputy Registar (Sherri Kern).  The board approved the change to the structure of ribbon cuttings was approved by the boar (Loren-1st motion; Kelli-2nd motion). New businesses will be invited to a Chamber meeting and will at this time be presented with their First $1 of Profit certificate. The photo for the Ribbon Cutting will then be scheduled separately w/Don or Ellie or taken at the Chamber meeting. This is to promote more attendance at the Chamber meetings.

4)     Outstanding Citizen/Hall of Fame- Laurie Driessen from the Chamber presented the nomination criteria and forms for this award. These were developed by her, Charleen Wallert from the City and Loren Hacker from Canby Rotary.  The board and attendees approved the forms (Loren – 1st motion; Kelli-2nd motion). The deadline for nominations is tentatively 1/10/06. Don/Ellie are going to start running ads soon regarding this award and reminding local businesses to nominate individual awards for their employees. The date for the award banquet/annual meeting will be finalized at the next board meeting.

5)     Canby Christmas Globe Ornaments- These have been completed and will be available for sale at the Chamber and at the upcoming Hospital Holiday Bazaar on November 5th.

 

New Business

6)     Future Speakers- No speaker in November-will be discussing Holiday Preview. December-Barb Hoyhtya suggested inviting Jim Nichols to discuss business opportunities around energy/transmission lines.

 

7)     Activities committee- Met October 6th.  There is still a need for members.  Holiday Preview: St Peters and Canby Elementary school students will be making holiday pictures to hang in participating storefronts. Deadline date for the kids to finish these designs-TBD.  There will be smores served in Birthday Park on 12/3 in conjunction with the Hay Ride.  Santa and Mrs. Santa have been confirmed and will be at the same place near PK Egans.   The board also approved an approximate donation of $35 for a Family Meal coupon at Jim’s. The drawing for this coupon will start around 11/26 and run until Christmas.  Artic Blast- The board approved the Chamber purchasing a 2006-Winter quilt made by Bonnie Longtin’s quilting business. This will be one of the raffle items. It will be a queen size and will cost approximately $300. Loren Hacker asked the Student Council representatives at the meeting to brainstorm ideas for other teen events they would like that weekend. Chili cook-off- will have 2 awards-one from community vote and the other by a Panel of Experts.

 

8)      SW MN Workforce Council Update – Laurie presented the new focus for this group which is to find and promote businesses to join cities in the 14 county area.

 

9)     Canby Airport Update – Barb Hoyhtya reported the runway will open in 1-2 weeks and the Departure/Arrival building will open in approximately a month.

 

10) MN West Tech College Canby Campus Update – Katie Delaney reported that there are more online courses available to students. Also, on 10/26, the Canby campus will be hosting a Tech Search Day allowing high school kids to shadow the college students. 12/7 will be the Annual Holiday Mixer.     

 

11) Luanne Fondell-Dawson-Boyd Arts Association– Luanne discussed the history of this non-profit organization and the upcoming events/performances. She encouraged the Canby Public Schools to consider a field trip for the students to see some of these performances.
