Canby Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting May 10th – PK Egans
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on May 10th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Laurie Driessen, Amy Newcomb, Derrick Ruether, Sabrina Stockman, Don Beman and Kelli Palmquist. Also present were Pat Stanley, Ellie Beman, Terry Overlander, Ron Fjerkenstad, Nancy Salmon, Karen Houtman, Bonnie Longtin, Dr. JD Ries, Barb Hoyhtya, Jessica Sik, and Erin Hoffman. 2) Reports: Laurie called the meeting to order. Kelli sent the minutes from the April Chamber meeting to all active attendees on 4/13 to review. These minutes were also passed around to all attendees at this meeting. Don presented the March and April Treasurer report. Attendees approved both the Secretary and Treasurer’s reports. Old Business 3) Letter to Editor – Pat wrote a Letter to the Editor and submitted this to Don. The letter summarizes the changes to the criteria the Chamber uses for future Chamber Funding & Donations. The criteria change was approved at the March Annual Chamber meeting. 4) Hat Daze Status – Pat reported on the updated Hat Daze Activity calendar of events. The list of events can be accessed via the Events Committee (the detailed list is not included in these minutes). John Hansen from Canby Coop Credit Union requested to be a sponsor of an event – Derrick is contacting John. The next Events Committee meeting will be held Thurs, 5/11 at the City Hall. Barb also presented a list of activities that will occur on Sun, 6/18 for the Canby Airport Dedication. 5) Parade - Ron is driving the flag car during the Hat Daze parade. Kelli (State Farm) will donate candy for Ron to throw. Laurie is asking Dar Snortum to ride in the car to represent “Canby Citizen of the Year”. 6) Hat Daze Advertising Pat asked the Activities Committee about organizing the advertising for Hat Daze. Kelli reminded Pat that at the 3/22 Board meeting, the Board decided that each individual committee would be responsible for the organization and budgeting for advertising. 7) Hat Daze Quilt – Bonnie reported the quilt is on display at the Canby Credit Union. The quilt will then go to Duebers, then Canby Drug, and finally First Security Bank. Raffle tickets are complete and are $2 per ticket.
New Business
8) City of Canby Welcome Signs – Norman Mortenson is organizing the effort to update the Welcome signs on each end of town. His group has hired Sig Armitage to make the updated signs. They requested a donation of $228 from the Canby Chamber of Commerce. Derrick presented this to the group. Before approval, Laurie requsted that Norman and group present this at the next Chamber meeting for approval. How would the Chamber be recognized on the sign? Barb also noted that before those signs can be changed, Norman needs approval from the City Council. Derrick is contacting Norman.
9) Chamber of Commerce Raffle (Hat Daze) – Derrick received the permit for this raffle. In 2005, the raffle spent approximately $1500 on prizes. Derrick presented the preliminary list of prizes chosen for this raffle. The list includes 2 guns (total=$920) – purchased from True Value; 1 Gas Grill ($250) – purchasing from Runnings; $100-Canby Bucks; $99 Week of Camping-donated by Del Clark. Once finalized, Derrick is getting signs ready and information to post in the paper directing people to view items in the particular stores and where to buy tickets.
10) Tree Day-Central Park (May 19 at 2:00 pm) – Pat reminded the group that Frontier Communications is sponsoring Tree Day by purchasing trees to plant in Central Park. The elementary students are planting the trees. Pat encouraged Chamber members and the Board to come and support the event.
11) Smoking Forum – Barb reminded the group that the forum will be held on Weds, 5/17 at 7:00 pm in the High School cafeteria. The 6th grade students will be presenting essays supporting a “Smoke Free” Canby. There will be other speakers from the Community and a Q&A session.
12) Ribbon Cuttings – Canby Bakery – Thurs, 5/11 at 4:00 pm; Canby Airport Dedication (Barb Hoyhtya) – Sun, 6/18 between 11-11:30 am. Don is bringing 1st dollar of profit to each ribbon cutting.
13) Speaker – Dr. JD Ries – Heartland Eyecare – Dr. JD Ries presented an overview of the services provided by his Heartland Eyecare clinics. He runs these clinics with his wife, Renae. They own and operate 3 clinics in Canby, Dawson, and Marshall. Their services include routine eye care and also treatment for particular eye diseases. They partner with surgeons from Sioux Valley Hospital for specialized surgeries.
14) Future Speakers –3rd Qtr Speaker (July-Sept) – Nancy is working on arranging this speaker. At the March Board meeting, the group decided to have quarterly speakers instead of monthly. This allows more time for regular Chamber business to be completed.
