Canby Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting August 9th – PK Egans
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on August 9th at PK Egans with the following board members present: Derrick Ruether, Kelli Palmquist, Don Beman, and Amy Szumal. Also present were Bonnie Longtin, Eldeen Baer, Kari Harding, Ellie Beman, Karen Houtman, Archie Bruns, Katie Delaney, and Rebecca Weber. 2) Reports: Derrick called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees. Secretary’s report was approved (Kelli – 1st’; Amy – 2nd). Don presented the Treasurer’s report (Amy– 1st’; Kelli – 2nd). Old Business 3) Flower Barrels – These need to be ordered soon for next year. Ellie is contacting Laurie Driessen and the City to determine how many need to be replaced and if they plan to order wooden or plastic barrels.
4) MN West “Get Connected” Day – Rebecca Weber and Katie Delaney presented information for this event. This event is scheduled for Aug. 30th from 11 am -12:00 pm. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to sponsor a booth promoting their products and services, etc. There is a Fall Kick-off/Orientation day on Aug. 23rd but that is for the students only. Kari Harding and Kelli Palmquist will host a booth for the Chamber to promote local businesses. Items available at this booth include a listing of the Chamber businesses, job openings in the community, Welcome Wagon bags, and Prairie Junction Pamphlets. Kari & Kelli are organizing these items for the booth.
5) Welcome Wagon – Kelli is contacting Midge Victor to verify she has enough items for the current Welcome Wagon bags. She is also inviting Midge to participate in the Chamber booth at the MN West Aug 30th function.
6) Canby Chamber Coordinator – The group decided that this position will be on a volunteer basis; not a paid position. The position would require approximately 5-10 hours a week. Derrick has discussed this opportunity with Toni Runstad who is possibly interested in volunteering for this position. Ideas for what this position entails were discussed. Kelli requested that everyone send her ideas of what they feel this position should entail and she will create a list to be reviewed and approved by the Chamber.
New Business
7) Holiday Preview/Events Committee-Ellie asked for more volunteers for the Events committee. Karen Houtman, Kelli Palmquist and Bonnie Longtin volunteered. Kelli is asking Sabrina Stockman and Toni Runstand to see if they are interested. Ellie is also planning to invite representatives from the Porter March of Dimes committee to attend these planning meetings. The group agreed on Friday, Nov. 24th as the date for the Holiday Preview. The Artic Blast date is going to be set at the next Events Committee meeting. Ellie is working on scheduling the next committee meeting.
8) Historical Canby/Porter Play- Archie Bruns presented ideas on starting an annual play that would depict the history of both the cities of Canby and Porter. He was requesting volunteers/support from the Chamber. The Chamber does not have the manpower for volunteers for this event at this time. This is due to the existing sponsorship of Artic Blast and Hat Daze. Derrick suggested Archie call Barrie Citrowske who has worked on these types of plays before. Don also is giving Archie some ideas for these types of events.
9) Recruitment of New Board Members-Derrick discussed the need for additional board members and also additional general members. Kelli Palmquist does not plan to renew her board position as Secretary next year – she has served 3 years. Ellie is running an ad in the paper. Rebecca Weber plans to join as a general member. Archie Bruns joined as a general member today.
10) KT Trails-Eldeen Baer reported that the Marketplace is Sep 9th from 8:00 am-3:00 pm. Eldeen asked if the Chamber would support this event but did not specify what type of support she needed (monetary, volunteers, advertising, etc.). She was given the contact information for the Chamber webmaster for her to submit free advertising on the Chamber website regarding the KT event. Don is verifying that the Chamber did contribute monies to this event in forms of dues this year.
11) Next Meeting- Next meeting will be September 13th, 2006 at noon at PK Egan’s.
