Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting

April 18, 2007

Minnesota West Community & Technical College

1)    Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on April 18th at Minnesota West Community & Technical College with the following board members present: Laurie Driessen, Karen Houtman, Amy Szumal, Sabrina Stockman, Don Beman, Ellie Beman, Katie Delaney, and Rebecca Weber.  Also present were Bonnie Longtin, Pat Stanley, and Eldeen Baer.

2)    Reports: Laurie called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees.  The report was approved (1st-Pat 2nd-Sabrina).  The Treasurer’s report was passed around and reviewed by all attendees.  The Treasurer’s report was approved (1st-Amy, 2nd-Karen).

Old Business

3)    Third Annual Community Recognition Banquet:  This was a success!  The menu had fish and roast beef.  Served the same number as last year.  There was a suggestion to talk to the VFW about having an extra bartender on duty.  The committee will meet to review this year’s banquet and begin discussing next year’s banquet.  Next year the committee will do an invite to people.  Loren sent the letter with the Blue Gold letter and that did not work.  Possibly include these letters in the dues letters next year.  Pat proposed moving the Citizen of the Year photos to a different area in City Hall.  To complete this, the Chamber would need to be on the agenda.  Karen proposed having the Chamber on the Council’s agenda to give a report since we have similar goals for the City.  Laurie has been meeting with Barb every month to see if there is anything they need on the Chamber’s agenda.  Pat will look into the costs for moving the photos.

4)    Review of First Hospitality Night:  There were not a lot of people in attendance.  The group could have been larger.  Ellie has not received the torn tickets yet from the VFW so the Chamber does not know the final number.  Marketing committee will work on it and is willing to give it one more shot.  There was a suggestion for more notice.  The April 12th event was on short notice.  There was discussion about the website.  Don discussed how the Canby News’ website works and that it is very simple to create.  Every business should have a website.  Don proposed a rudimentary class by Ellie on website creation.  This has been done in the past and has not been successful.  This may be tried in the fall or at the next hospitality night.  Laurie discussed Josh Sumption.  He has not returned any of Laurie’s requests to attend a meeting.  The Chamber may need to find a new webmaster.

5)    Raffle Committee:  Pat and Sabrina were meeting after the Chamber meeting to discuss the raffle.  Permit is at City Hall and has been approved.  There will be no guns on this year’s raffle.  There was a suggestion for a kid’s raffle, but tough for management and a separate set of tickets are needed.  The Chamber will not be asking for donations from businesses.  There will be a letter in the dues letter saying that if a business wants to donate, they may drop off an item.  There will be a deadline for winners to pick up prizes after the raffle drawing.  It will be a 60 or 90 day deadline.

6)    Activities/Hat Daze Update:  The committee is meeting on April 19th.  Laurie announced the REM will be doing the volleyball again.

New Business

7)    City of Canby-Request for approval to have raffle:  The request was approved at the Monday night Council meeting.

8)    Banners:  Chris Husby keeps bringing the banners to the Chamber and says they are wrecked.  The banners are fine.  Laurie, Becky, and Ellie volunteered to go through the banners and will decide which ones are good, which ones need repair, and which ones need to be cleaned.  There is a shoe store in Marshall that does banner repair.  Laurie, Bekcy, and Ellie will also check the Christmas banners.

9)    New Businesses in Canby:  Amy’s, American Financial Partners, Outland Energy, and Café Midway.  A letter will be put together and sent to them for a ribbon cutting and first dollar of profit.  Becky will help with new member drive.

10) Christmas Light Promotion:  Liz Verhelst wants to lead a promotion to get new Christmas lights for the City, similar to Kari Harding’s drive for defibrillators in the police cars.  Becky mentioned that in Granite Falls, the businesses were asked to sponsor a pole.  Becky will contact Liz with the information.

11) Marketing New Ideas:  Marketing meeting on April 19th.  Also, Fix-Up Fund needs to get started.  Ellie passed out an article from the Appleton newspaper about Jack Schultz a CEO from Agracel, Inc and how small towns can recover from declining populations and sagging economies.

12) KT Marketplace:  Eldeen Baer spoke for the Marketplace.  Ideas are needed to promote the event on the 2nd Saturday in September.  This will possibly be held in the depot so there is more access to downtown businesses.  This is usually held in the park.  A group in Texas has discovered the King of Trails and is working on the same ideas and issues as the Canby group.  A group from Canby will be meeting with them in the future.

13) Other Chamber Business:  Organizing the space at the Canby News-has not met yet.  Also, Greg Pommier is retiring from Cleveland Chevrolet.  The Chamber will present him with some items from the Chamber.

14) Adjournment:  Motion to adjourn (1st-Karen, 2nd-Becky).  Motion approved.

15) Next Meeting:  May 16th, 12:00 p.m. at Minnesota West.
