Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting May 16, 2007 Minnesota West Community & Technical College
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 12:00 pm on May 16th at Minnesota West Community & Technical College with the following board members present: Laurie Driessen, Amy Szumal, Sabrina Stockman, Don Beman, Ellie Beman, Katie Delaney, and Rebecca Weber. Also present were Bonnie Longtin, Pat Stanley, Dan Gallegos, Eric Nefstead, Deb Nefstead, and Chad Leibel. 2) Reports: Laurie called the meeting to order. The Secretary’s report was passed around to all attendees. The report was approved (1st-Pat 2nd-Sabrina). The Treasurer’s report was passed around and reviewed by all attendees. Don noted that the dues letters are ready to go. The Treasurer’s report was approved (1st-Pat, 2nd-Katie). Old Business 3) Raffle Committee: Permit is on its way. The tickets will need to be ordered when the permit is received. Sabrina passed around a list of raffle items for the Chamber’s review. This year’s raffle items include a grill, lawn mower, and gift certificates all purchased from business owners in Canby. The Chamber will not be asking for donations from the businesses in town. A letter will be included in the dues letters saying that the Chamber will not be asking businesses for donations for this year’s raffle. 4) Dues Letters and New Member Drive: Laurie reviewed the dues letters that are going to be sent to current members and to new members. The Chamber at Work and the raffle committee letter will also be added to the dues letters. All information needs to be sent to Laurie by May 21st. 5) Activities/Hat Daze Update: Ellie discussed Hat Daze. The Red Hats are willing to sponsor a hat contest. The Connection will be having a craft fair in the park. There will not be a flea market this year due to the problems last year. Any non-profit organization or business based in Canby can have fundraising activities at the park. Ellie is working with D & K RV Sales to have a camper open house. As of the meeting, they had not returned Ellie’s call. The Activities committee is looking for a tent to fill in space at the park. Also, a sound system is needed so there is music all of the time. The Class of ’59 approached Ellie and asked if they could have their impersonator perform at the park. Sturdevant’s will have the cars at Hat Daze again. Laurie received an email from Peter Haugen, the manager of the Canby Knights amateur baseball team. He asked if they could be included on the Hat Daze schedule of events. An announcer is need for the raffle. Pat is going to check with John Hansen, Mark Greenway, or Craig Kaddatz. Also, he said that the fishing pier has slid 10 feet away from shore due to the winter weather. Ron is working with the DNR to assist in moving it back. Pat will work on the kids fishing derby. 6) Marketing Committee: There has been no response to the Fix-Up Fund. Ellie walked around with forms and five or six businesses said that they were going to apply. The Hospitality night is on hold. There was a suggestion to have a rib fest in the park. Weather is always a factor in holding an event of this type. There was a suggestion to have it out Del Clark. Dan is going to talk to Ron Fjerkenstad. 7) Update on Office Committee: This is going to begin in June.
New Business 8) Eric Nefstead: Eric is working on obtaining his Eagle Scout. He plans to put a pergola at Sylvan Park. He presented different designs and costs for the pergola. He discussed the materials for it. Wood is higher maintenance because it needs to be painted. The vinyl is ready to go and does not need much maintenance. He was asking for Chamber support to take this to the City Council. The Chamber approved support for this project (1st-Pat, 2nd-Don). Laurie, Deb, and Ellie will be working on this project with Eric.
9) Christmas Decorations: The Chamber discussed having a meeting to discuss fundraising for the lights. The Chamber also discussed having a local person build the lights. Pat Vlaminck is certified to do the wiring for these types of lights. The meeting will take place after Hat Daze.
10) Ribbon Cuttings: Ellie will be contacting Amy’s. Katie will be contacting American Financial Partners, Sabrina will be contacting Outland Energy, and Café Midway was scheduled at the meeting for 10:00 a.m. on May 18th.
11) Noon Meals: There was a discussion about the noon meals since the food service at MN West is closed for the summer. The Café Midway will be preparing the meals for the Chamber. Dan will email choices and the Chamber will decide. It was approved to have meals from the Café Midway (1st-Ellie, 2nd-Sabrina).
12) Agenda items: Reminder that all agenda items need to be brought to the President at least one week in advance.
13) Website: Laurie has not heard from Josh. Chamber may possibly be looking for a new webmaster. Amy checked the website about a week or two ago and it didn’t look the minutes had been put up there. She was going to check again. The Chamber approved to withhold payment from Josh (1st-Pat, 2nd-Amy). After further discussion the Chamber decided to rescind the motion to withhold payment. There was a motion to rescind the previous motion (1st-Pat, 2nd –Sabrina) approved. This will be discussed at the next Chamber meeting. Katie will be checking to see who maintains Lake Benton’s website.
14) Banners: These need to be worked on.
15) Adjournment: Motion to adjourn (1st-Amy, 2nd-Sabrina). Motion approved.
