Canby Chamber of Commerce Meeting Special Meeting June 7th, 2007 DeToy’s
1) Attendees: The Canby Chamber of Commerce met at 5:30 pm on June 7th at DeToy’s with the following board members present: Laurie Driessen, Amy Szumal, Ellie Beman, and Karen Houtman. Also present were Bonnie Longtin, Pat Stanley, and Liz Verhelst. Please note that the Chamber did not have enough members present for quorum so no items could be voted on at the meeting. All items below were discussed.
2) Christmas Light Project: Liz Verhelst discussed the project. She is thinking about doing some background work for now until November when the lights are up and people are thinking about them. She had an idea to do an article similar to the defibrillator project. She said that businesses were discussed, but they are asked by so many individuals for donations that she did not feel it was a good idea to ask them for donations. She suggested that the community vote on a style of lights (wreaths, candy canes, or snowflakes) so the community has an opportunity to put input into the lights, not just one group making the decision. Bonnie had quotes from SMI for lights. The lights would be approximately $300-$400. The City has a catalog of lights that may have some ideas. Snowflakes could be left up for Arctic Blast. Becky Weber left a message for Liz to contact Tammy in Granite Falls to get ideas for the lights. Pat mentioned that there is money already set aside for the lights. He thought approximately $700-$800. There was discussion about doing so many lights in a year. There was a suggestion to ask the City for money to help with the project. 3) Hat Daze Update: Ellie presented the poster. The quilt is at Duebers and will be at State Farm next week. The tent that the Chamber uses for the park is owned by the Madison funeral home and the Chamber is waiting to see if they can use the tent. If not, a screen tent will be used. Restrooms are being ordered. Ellie also had a list of raffle tickets. Items include Twins Tickets, tickets to Chanhassen Dinner Theater, and gift certificates from PK’s. Jodi Olson, Louis Lehman, and Joyce Baer will help in the tent at the park. Amy mentioned that Sabrina and she would be able to help as well. Ellie also mentioned that she has rented Eickhoff’s tent for the park. Also, an insurance company will be giving away a bike and Big Stone Therapies will be giving chair massages. Ellie is looking into getting the radio stations to do remotes from Hat Daze. She is also checking with Mona Gottskalkson to see if she can DJ in the park. There needs to be music in the park. The parade committee sent an email to Ellie. The email mentioned that they maybe under budget this year and they need help for the line up and announcing of the parade. Also included in the email is the committee will probably be handing off the baton to someone next year. It is not a lot of work and they are willing to help. Ellie thinks they are ready for Hat Daze. Next year, Hat Daze will be organized a different way. 4) Web Site updating: Laurie, Don, and Amy have heard from Josh. He had read some minutes from a previous meeting and was upset with the Chamber. He is very willing to work with the Chamber and agrees that the website needs to be updated. This will be discussed at the next meeting. 5) Eric Nefstead: The City Council has approved Eric’s project. He asked the City to use the land at Sylvan Park and it was approved. There was discussion about the electricity at the Park. There is electricity, but the City will not turn it on. The City approved the Pergola and the electricity. The Chamber is sponsoring Eric’s project. He needed to be sponsored by a non-profit group. He will be doing fundraisers to raise money for the project. He was given the suggestion to contact the Rotary. Pete Snortum will be laying the block for the pergola and the pergola will be wood. The project needs to be completed by October. Eric’s father would like to put lights around the pergola so it is able to be seen when someone is driving by it. 6) Canby Clean-Up: The Connection had the Canby Clean-Up. Karen made lunch for the kids. Last year, the Rotary paid for the lunch. She asked if the Chamber would pay it for this year. Due to not having enough people to take action, Laurie asked her to bring that to the next meeting. 7) Playground at Elementary: Karen discussed that there is a new playground that is going to be built at the elementary school. The Connection will be organizing community helpers. Approximately 20 people are needed per day to help with the project. Laurie suggested that she asked the City workers to help with the building. Laurie used Montevideo as an example. The City employees took time off from their positions and donated their time to help build the new playground at the park in Montevideo.
8) Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned. There could not be a vote due to not having quorum at the meeting.
9) Next Meeting: Next regular membership meeting will be June 20th, 12:00 p.m. at MN West.
